PUBLIC ART CALL: CALGARY Looking for local artists to make their mark on our city’s streetscape The City of Calgary invites local artists to submit proposals to create art on utility boxes at various locations throughout the city. Submissions are being accepted on an on-going basis, with locations being assigned as time, weather and budget allows.

This project not only provides a great opportunity for local artists to increase their exposure, but also works to discourage graffiti while creating a vibrant, inclusive and interesting urban environment.

The fees paid to artists will range from $400 to $1000 depending on the size of the utility box. The City will prepare and prime each box prior to the artist applying the approved design, as well as supply a painting kit which will include eight exterior acrylic mural paint colours, masking tape, plastic drop sheet, safety vest and traffic cones.

Artists must reside in Calgary and are encouraged to consider the context of the area, and the city as a whole, in their design. Artists may submit more than one design proposal (template) along with a statement for each design.

The complete call to artists is available here – http://www.calgary.ca/docgallery/bu/recreation/public_art/Painted-Utility-Box-Project-2011.pdf

This opportunity is being presented through The City of Calgary Roads, with the support of the Public Art Program.
