AI and Visual artists: finding a way forward

The impacts of AI are being felt in every domain. Visual artists are at the epicentre of the generative AI ‘revolution’. Their work has been repurposed as training data without consent or compensation. While the courts determine the legalities of this approach, it’s hard to imagine that anyone would say this is fair or ethical. Is it possible for visual artists to benefit from AI given these circumstances? What would those opportunities entail? In this session, we’ll tackle those tough questions through a socio-technical lens. We’ll cover the basics of how AI is made, how it works, the ways in which it doesn’t work and consider what needs to change to ensure a more equitable, inclusive and ethical AI future.
