Location: Edmonton or Calgary. Up to two days hybrid working.
Hours: Permanent full-time, 35 hours per week.
Salary: $65,000 – $75,000
About the Position
Visual Arts Alberta Association, operating as CARFAC Alberta, is a not-for-profit society that advocates for fair treatment and practices of visual artists. We are the provincial affiliate for Canadian Artists’ Representation/Le Front des Artistes Canadiens (CARFAC).
The Executive Director is responsible for the overall strategic, operational, and financial leadership of CARFAC Alberta, ensuring alignment with our mandate and strategic business plan. This is done through advocacy, building stakeholder and community relationships, mentoring, educational programming and fund development.
Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director champions our advocacy efforts, fosters community and stakeholder relationships, and oversees the delivery of programs\ that support our mandate and elevates the arts sector.
Responsibilities:
Leadership & Governance
- Implement and advance the strategic business plan developed in collaboration with the Board.
- Serves as key advisor to the Board, providing regular updates to the on financial, strategic initiatives, risks, community engagement and organisational performance.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable municipal, provincial and federal regulations.
- Effectively communicate the organisation’s vision and goals to staff, fostering a culture of integrity, advocacy, innovation and customer service.
- Manages recruitment, mentorship, performance management, and development of staff, creating an inclusive and mandate-driven workplace.
Finance & Risk Management
- Lead financial planning and resource allocation; ensure the financial health and sustainability of the organisation.
- Identify and secure funding opportunities through grant writing, donor cultivation, and partnership development. Write reports to funders.
- Collaborate with the Board to develop risk management strategies and contingency plans for programs and events.
- Maintain transparent financial reporting and controls.
- Conduct review of all legal agreements on behalf of the organization, ensure contracts meet CARFAC’s expectations for liability, responsibility and general terms.
- Ensure appropriate standard templates for contracts and other legal documents are being used as appropriate, using external legal counsel as required.
Marketing & Programming Development
- Oversees CARFAC Alberta’s marketing, branding and public communications in alignment with strategic objectives.
- Develop and evaluate annual programming, using data and feedback to inform improvements and innovations in conjunction with the Marketing & Membership Coordinator.
- Lead professional development and best practice programming and ensure effective execution of programs and events.
- Develop education and best practice resources for members.
- Work with the Marketing & Membership Coordinator to ensure effective delivery of programs and events.
- Leads Professional Development sessions for CARFAC Alberta to deliver member engagement and growth.
- Develop and execute marketing strategies (social media, newsletters, community campaigns) that drive awareness.
Engagement & Advocacy
- Act as the spokesperson for CARFAC Alberta, representing the organisation at events, and among community stakeholders and partners.
- Build and maintain community connections, partnerships with other organisations.
- Collaborates on projects that support artists in the community and deliver our mandate.
- Develops partnerships with other organisations to further our mandate.
- Works with organisations such as CARFAC National, APAC, etc.
- Support membership growth and engagement through outreach, programming, sharing of best practices and responsive service.
Operations
- Oversee daily operations to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of services and initiatives.
- Support Board and Committee meetings, including preparation of materials and participation in discussions.
- Coordinate all external consultants and contractors to support successful initiatives in IT, human
- resources, grant applications, etc.
- Undertake special projects as assigned by the Board President.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Arts, Nonprofit Management or Business Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in a nonprofit or arts-related organisation.
- Demonstrated success in fund development and grant writing.
- Proven ability to collaborate with Board of Directors and work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Working knowledge of the arts sector and related community dynamics.
Skills & Abilities
- Exceptional leadership, mentoring and change management skills.
- Ability to effectively lead and manage staff, in-person and remote.
- Strong interpersonal skills, able to build relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, maintaining confidence, poise and a positive tone and demeanor in all situations.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.Confident public speaker, with the ability to represent the organisation effectively to diverse audiences.
- Exceptional strategic analysis and report writing skills.
- Strong financial acumen and experience managing budgets.
- Proficient in diagnosing challenges and crafting creative, strategic solutions.
- Strong organisational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and multitask.
- Commitment to working as part of a team and leading a team.
- Strong knowledge of funding agencies and grant writing skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe In Design (or equivalent) QuickBooks, social media platforms and website management tools.
